William Jackson Matney, Jr.

Jack Matney is the Managing Member of Matney Legal Group. He focuses his practice on intellectual property (IP) counseling and litigation, prosecution, contract and licensing agreements, patentability and freedom-to-operate opinions, due diligence, trade secret, trademark, and copyright matters.

Jack’s practice has led to expertise in a number of technical areas, including medical devices, tissue engineering, sugar manufacturing, cybersecurity, energy storage products, hydrocolloid and silver-impregnated wound gauzes, blood glucose meters, genetics, chemotherapy compounds and treatments, pharmaceuticals, heating packs, and telecommunications (satellite communications systems, software and Internet-related inventions, video display devices, telephonic switching devices, and semiconductor manufacturing).

In addition, his work in automotive and manufacturing involves technology related to textiles, elastics, dye formulations, laser treatments, automotive components, sheet metal processing, catalysts, paper converting machines, check valves and associated enclosures, thermoplastic extrusion and molding, adhesive bonding, and air and water pollution treatment devices.  

Prior to launching Matney Legal Group in 2023, Jack was a partner in several multinational law firms, including Morgan Lewis and Baker McKenzie, and started in the IP field as an Examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office from 1990 to 1994 in Art Unit 135, which examined patent applications in the molding and extrusion arts.

Jack earned his JD in 1995 from George Washington University and his MBA from Central Michigan University while he was working as a Chemical Engineer at The Dow Chemical Company. He earned his BS in Chemical Engineering in 1985 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University.
